When you rank up your companion, you're just giving them **Skill Points (SP)** to become a better punchy-bird (Attacker), a chunky-bird (Defender), or a healer-bird. There *is* an "Increase Attack Speed" trait at Rank 9 in the Attacker tree, but that just means they peck enemies faster, not that they'll win a race!
